24 Jun How do you manage your day?
Email, SMS, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, phone calls, Messenger….. are just some of the ways that we are contactable in the 24/7 business world!
The days of turning off your computer and leaving the office at 5pm and not being contacted again until you stroll back into the office at 9am the next morning clutching your decaf soy double shot caramel latte in your hands trying not to make eye contact with Jenny on reception in fear that you may have to hear about her planned cruise around Europe in 10 weeks… for the 20th time, are now officially over.
One question that I get asked often is ‘how do you do it?’. My answer is simple.. I don’t know! There is no secret formula, no amazing time management app – I just have to get it done.
My operational style is very reactive – not by choice, but through necessity. Playing in the world of digital marketing and design, we operate in a 24/7 world and therefore some tasks simply cannot wait until tomorrow morning. Emails need to be answered, campaigns need to be designed and clients need to be kept in the loop at all stages of the project.
Clients know that when they engage Kip Creative for a project, they get our full attention. I go as far as treating the business as my own and make branding and marketing decisions based on what I would do if I were running the company. This reiterates to the client that they can trust what we are proposing and that we would never do anything to harm or tarnish the brands we work so tirelessly to create.
Last week I read an article written by an entrepreneur stating that she only reads and responds to emails once a day at a specific time.. (*insert clapping hands emoticon here) How, in this fast paced business world are we, as business owners, have the luxury of ‘taking our time’. We don’t. If you are too slow in your decision making process there are 7 other people ready to swoop in and take your revenue.
I recently attended an event with Roxy Jacenko (Sweaty Betty PR & Ministry of Talent) where she spoke about how she runs her businesses, her life and her family. The woman is an inspiration! Like her or not, Roxy is a living example of how hard work, and a great ‘fuck it, just do it’ attitude has taken her from the Director of first impressions/receptionist, to a national PR powerhouse. If you ever get the opportunity to see Roxy speak at an event, you won’t be disappointed.
Everyone functions at different levels and you need to understand what works for you – do that, and you will find that you will be more productive on a daily basis and the results will fall into place.
